Teddington Elderflower Back to Hockey ladies team

Congratulations to Teddington, Bromley and Beckenham and Bodmin Ladies Hockey Clubs who have all made it to the final of the Amateur team section of the Fair Game awards, which is a competition run by Stylist magazine and sponsored by Adidas. The competition is aimed at supporting women in sport.

There are 20 teams on the shortlist and the ten winners will be fully kitted out by Adidas. The winners will be decided by public vote. So have a read through the stories below, click on the link to vote for your favourite and let's make sure that three of the winning teams are from hockey! Voting closes Wednesday 20 February.

Teddington 'Elderflowers' Back to Hockey

This year's Teddington Ladies Fifth team (pictured above) is made up entirely of women who started playing hockey last year as part of the Elderflowers "Back to Hockey" group at Teddington Hockey Club. Many of them had not played hockey before and others had not played since school. The average age of the outfield players is 40+.

Most have borrowed kit and sticks from their children and although they haven't yet scored a goal in a league match, over 27 ladies have now taken a turn at playing for the side and they have all really enjoyed their first taste of competitive hockey.

They have received considerable support and encouragement from everyone at Teddington Hockey Club with the Ladies 1st XI supplying coaches for their weekly training sessions.

Please vote for them - with new Adidas hockey sticks they might even score their first goal!

Bodmin Ladies Hockey Team

“We have 22 members in our squad with ages ranging from 14 to 45. The whole squad trains once a week and most team members run together in small group once or twice a week as well. Last year we had a fantastic season scoring 143 league goals and gaining promotion.

This season we are having a harder time due to promotion and some injuries.

Despite this, we have a great team who turn up to training and matches every week with smiles on their faces and play a great game of hockey.”

Bromley and Beckenham

“We’re based in south-east London and merged eight years ago between the two local hockey clubs Bromley and Beckenham. Back then our Ladies 1s were in the East Division 1, and have since gained promotion to National League - being of only a small number of clubs to have both their ladies and mens in NL. With four more ladies teams to field each week, as you can imagine it’s not easy with all the added costs!

This opportunity to get new kit for our Ladies 1s would be amazing because I think they deserve a treat for their hard work, commitment and spirit over the years and also the money that would’ve been used to get new kit for next year can now go towards other things, such as coaching and developing our youth sides.”
