Play-Off march continues in Investec Premier Division

HAVING drawn with second-placed Leicester last weekend, Canterbury face another tough test against third-placed Reading in the Investec Women’s Hockey League Premier Division on Saturday.

Currently unbeaten in the league this season, Canterbury are just one point ahead of Leicester. Victory over Reading could see Canterbury become the first side to cement their spot in the end of season play-offs.

“We’re quite confident,” said Canterbury coach Nick Clark. “But realistically all the top teams have got five difficult games to go – we’ve got Reading, and we’ve got to go to Clifton and Birmingham, and we lost at Clifton last season. It’s a bit of a cliché but it’s one game at a time.”

Reading draw 5-5 with Canterbury earlier in the season, and Clark added: “The previous game saw two very different sides, as we both had players missing, so we won’t place too much important on past results.”

Clark praised Slough’s commitment during their 5-2 win last weekend, and the Berkshire side will continue their battle against relegation when they entertain Sutton Coldfield on Saturday.

Fifth in the table, Bowdon Hightown go to Olton and West Warwickshire as they bid to make the play-offs, while University of Birmingham host Clifton.

In the Investec Conference East, leaders Harleston Magpies had their lead cut to just two points when they lost out 4-1 at Ipswich last weekend, and they will be aiming to get back to winning ways when they go to St Albans on Saturday.

Leaders Beeston entertain third-placed Loughborough Students in the Investec Conference North, while second-placed University of Durham travel to North East rivals Whitley Bay and Tynemouth.

And in the Investec Conference West, runaway leaders Buckingham face second-placed Gloucester City.
