England Hockey’s umpiring ambition underway

Umpire Bruce Bale sees the funny side

Following 12 months of research and planning, November saw the start of the implementation of the England Hockey (EH) Strategic Plan for 2013-17. The focus of the Plan is to improve the playing experience through the provision of high quality umpiring and has been developed following extensive consultation with regional and county Hockey Umpiring Associations (HUAs) and Hockey Associations (HAs), the National Programme Umpiring Association (NPUA), active officials, players, club and league representatives.

Season 2013-14 has seen some significant and exciting changes:

A New Level 1 Umpire Award Course

A new course is now available, offering participants a more interactive and practical experience. Participants will gain a L1 accreditation upon completion of the course and a new online rules test. The registration process is straightforward, with course participants being able to book online

A New Rules Education and Testing Site

This fantastic new resource is free to all umpires (as well as players, coaches and spectators) and is designed to help improve knowledge of the Rules of Hockey. On this site you can study the Rules and watch video examples to build your understanding of how they are applied on the field of play. There's an online test to check your knowledge, on completion of which you can download your personalised awareness certificate.

A Trained Tutor Workforce

55 L1 tutors have been recruited and trained to deliver the new L1 course. This represents the first stage in developing a skilled workforce to deliver high quality training and education throughout the umpire development pathway.

A New Umpire Development Pathway

The new umpire development pathway is designed to help ensure umpires are only appointed to matches for which they are suitable and provides a clear progression structure.

Over the next 12 months, further training and education resources will be developed and a team of five regional trainers will also be recruited to work with the newly recruited tutors.
