The 22nd Rover Oxford Hockey Festival

Oxford U8 squad celebrate their victory

The 22nd Rover Oxford Hockey Festival hosted by Oxford Hockey Club took place over the weekend in the magnificent grounds of Cokethorpe School, Witney.

Over 500 children participated in what has become the area's traditional end-of-season 7-a-side finale, with teams participating from all over the south as well as regular visitors Banbridge Academy from Northern Ireland.

On Saturday the Under 12 boys kicked off proceedings, with Oxford clubs finishing in three of the top four places with Hawks comfortably running out  5-0 winners against Aylesbury. In the afternoon, Hawks again picked up the winners' medals but this time in a much closer 1-0 win over Eastcote. In the U14 girls competition Oxford just missed out on a place in the final after losing to the eventual runners-up Cirencester 1-0 in a shoot-out. However, it was a strong Cheltenham side who ran out 1-0 winners in the final.

On Sunday the Under 8 mixed competition was run with one competitive league and one friendly league. Oxford ‘A’ dominated from start to finish, not losing a game all morning and playing high class hockey, taking home the winners medals with a 4-1 victory in the final over Wallingford. The Under 10s were divided into two ability leagues with Eastcote beating Reading 1-0 in the B league final whilst Wallingford just overcame Oxford to the take the A league final in a shoot-out having drawn 1-1 at full time. The final competition for the U12 girls saw some of the best hockey of the weekend with Cirencester showing great strength in depth finishing first and third, over-coming Reading 2-0 in the final and Wallingford 2-1 after a shoot-out in the third place play-off.

Festival organiser Nick Malden said at the medal presentation, “It’s fantastic to see so many children taking part in this Olympic sport and that the increase in both numbers and standard demonstrates a continuing legacy from London 2012”
