Back to Hockey, and back for good...

Back to Hockey

Emma Bains loved playing hockey when she was younger; hailing from Northern Ireland she played for the school first eleven, played club hockey for Ards and was part of the Ulster under 16 selection squad for two years.

Like many others when she left school and moved to college, life took over, and she eventually stopped playing hockey.

Fast forward 16 years and Emma is taking her boys along to their football practice. “On this particular day I noticed a poster advertising Back to Hockey sessions and saw this as a great opportunity to try the sport again!”

A few weeks later Emma e-mailed Ashford Hockey Club in Kent and was encouraged to go along to a Back to Hockey session to give it a try.  “Before my first session I felt so nervous, but I’m glad I went along everyone was really welcoming and friendly.  I quickly realised I still had some playing ability and I really enjoyed it!

To begin with I didn’t have a stick, shin pads or anything but that was alright because the club had equipment I was able to borrow.”

With the support of Ashford Hockey Club in Kent Emma continued with Back to Hockey sessions and went onto play mixed hockey over the summer.  “The coach made sure he also went along so I knew someone and I even played a match.

“After the summer I decided that I wanted to continue playing and play more often, so I did! I progressed onto be selected for Ashford 1st XI and have played regularly ever since, I have even scored a few goals!”

Back to Hockey sessions are fun, sociable and informal sessions aimed at people who may not have played hockey for a number of years or who are looking to play for the first time.  Whether you’re looking to play informally when it suits you or you’re looking to progress onto playing club hockey like Emma, Back to Hockey sessions are a great place to start.

“I am so pleased Ashford Hockey Club ran Back to Hockey sessions, otherwise I would never have considered starting playing.  I really enjoy playing as part of a team again and my kids love coming to see my play.  It’s nice to see that I can make them proud.”

Ashford Hockey club in Kent will be one of over 100 clubs running Back to Hockey sessions as part of the next National Back to Hockey Campaign starting on the 11th of May. Their sessions will run every Thursday evening from 6:30pm – 7:30pm.
