Garstang Ladies HC use Back to Hockey to target casual players

Garstang Ladies Hockey Club have delivered Back to Hockey for those players who don’t want to or are unable to fully commit to a club. Josie Rice, who undertakes may roles at the club shares their story.

Why do the club run Back to Hockey?

'As it targets women and girls who want to play just for fun and don't want to commit to a club environment. The sessions also allow individuals to play in a less serious environment, with liked minded players at a similar level to themselves. The club environment misses out targeting women who want to play for those reasons!'

On organising and promoting sessions

'We reflected on previous coaching sessions, undertook some website research and used the England Hockey literature to make sure the sessions we ran would be fun and help the ladies improve their basic skills and fitness. We then set about promoting the session via social media, emails to former members, word of mouth through current members and linking up with other local organisations.'

How did the sessions go?

'Really well and we received great feedback from the players about them having fun. The sessions were mainly game play with lots of small sided games, which went down really well and then we also included a little bit of basic skills for players when they asked. We had a real mix of players attend; from some who had been out of the game since school, a mum of a player from the club who brought her friends and extended family, to one of our regular umpires who doesn’t play club hockey as she umpires instead.'

What were the best bits?

'Seeing the women having fun, enjoying themselves and feeling fitter. The look on their face when they score. I love seeing women engaged in sport. Back to Hockey is also continuing through What Women Want* and anyone from those sessions who wants to continue playing are being signposted to the club.'

It was also great to hear from Jo (pictured above, left) who attends the Back to Hockey sessions;

'At first glance when I saw the advertisement for 'Back to Hockey' I wanted to relive my youth! Never thought I would actually do it! Until a few of us got together to give it a go! Best thing I ever did! The coaches are amazing and it's for any fitness level. As many of us who go to hockey will agree this has been a great opportunity for many both on a physical side and a social side and I can only hope this continues. As everyone has come a long way since the day we started!'
