Forest Flyerz take on rivals Braintree

On Sunday 29 October, Forest Flyerz hosted Braintree Flyerz in a seven-a-side friendly match. We caught up with the Forest Flyerz to see how they got on and the impact Flyerz is having on the players.

These two teams have been rivals for several years, with Braintree Flyerz normally coming out on top. But with their opponents missing a few players, Forest Flyerz ran out winners this time with some great team play. Nirmiith and Zayd made their debuts and loved the experience, with their parents proudly commenting on how much they’ve progressed since the start of this season.

"Nirmiith has been attending Flyerz for the past two years," his mum shared.

"I can see the change in his behaviour after he started training as part of the Eagles. He has become serious about hockey and is showing maturity as well.

"As a mother, I am just thrilled that my child has the opportunity to take part in something like this which would be denied to him if there was no Flyerz. Actually, I have even sent photos of him in his Flyerz kit to my family members and friends. I have also used the photos to encourage other parents to send their children to Flyerz!"

Mudassar’s mum said after how proud she was of Mudassar for taking part and being responsible. The captain himself said: "I’m very proud to be captain of the team; I am always ready to help others."

Forest Flyers 2017 team

The progress of the Forest Flyerz team has come about through a change in structure, Hannah Dobbin the Forest Flyerz coordinator shared with us.

"This season the group has officially split into two groups so that everyone can train at an appropriate level. Forest Flyerz Buzzards train indoors and the focus is on getting active in an inclusive, social environment. It has several players who need one-to-one support and the sessions are planned each week to be engaging and fun. Forest Flyerz Eagles train outdoors and is for players who want to compete and prepare for games. The sessions are very much game-based, trying to keep as close as possible to The Golden Thread principle.

"Over the years Forest Flyerz has faced many challenges and now they’re faced with a new one. As players improve, their desire to compete and to win becomes stronger; a natural part of sport. Part of the magic of Flyerz is the pure joy of playing; the opportunity to pull on a club shirt and play alongside their team mates. The challenge is to keep the joy of playing without dampening that desire to compete."

Forest Flyerz v Braintree Flyerz

Hannah Dobbin, Forest Flyerz Co-ordinator said after the match on Sunday 'It’s great to see the rivalry between the Forest and Braintree Flyerz teams continue and each season you can see the players improving. Our players also wore our new Flyerz kit, some players have never had team shirt before and they loved it!'

This is the first in a series of matches that Forest Flyerz has planned over the season. They are also preparing to host their annual Flyerz Fun Day in May 2018, take part in the National Flyerz Festival and possibly attend an overseas event next year.
