England women opened their Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games campaign with a 2-0 win over South Africa.

Grace Balsdon and Susannah Townsend were both in target and the squad next face Wales tomorrow at 10.30am UK time.

Speaking after the match head coach Danny Kerry praised his sides showing, he said: “It was a good astute performance and we prevented any South Africa attacks.

“We controlled the game in hot conditions and I’m really pleased for the team who have worked hard in preparing for this tournament.”

Captain Alex Danson became the fourth female hockey to compete at four Commonwealth Games tournaments, she said: “We are delighted with a strong first half performance and a very professional second half performance. 

“It’s three points and a solid start to the tournament, now it’s time to recover and take what we need from the game and look forward to playing Wales.”

Vice-captain Laura Unsworth complimented England’s ‘professional performance, she said: “It was really good to get the three points in our first match. 

“For some of the squad it’s their first Commonwealth Games so there were a few nerves around but we all put in a very professional performance. 

“The newer players have brought a sense of freshness and we have a good balance of youth and experience and I think we are going to go well in this tournament.”
