Caradon Hockey Club one year on

caradon HC club of the year 2017
Caradon Hockey Club, based at Liskeard in Cornwall, have had an incredible year since winning the England Hockey Notts Sport Club of the Year Award 2017 – both on and off the pitch. They share the impact it has had winning this top prize almost a year on.

Interest in the sport in the area has increased, which has meant more people in the local community wanting to come and play. Due to this, we introduced a Ladies 4th team into Trelawney Division 2, as well as a ‘Badgers’ team for those wanting to come back to hockey and to cater for anyone not currently playing league hockey – giving everyone of any ability the chance to get out on the pitch and play competitive matches.

Despite being the end of the season, we are still receiving enquiries about joining in recent weeks! This has been helped massively by the exposure generated by the award win. It was reported in all the local newspapers, and our Chair Carina Hodge had an interview on the Breakfast Show on BBC Radio Cornwall, which was later repeated on their Saturday Sports programme. Our local newspaper, The Cornish Times, publishes all our match reports every week with photos, some weeks having both a double page and front page photo. We also caught up with the positives of social media, introducing twitter and Instagram accounts, a public Facebook page and even a YouTube channel with videos of our socials and training, which we intend to add to from next season.

The interest from our national award win also presented us with sponsorship opportunities. Persimmon Homes donated £750 as part of their Healthy Communities Scheme which was put towards pitch dividers for both the junior and senior tournaments, we received £1000 worth of kit for the juniors kindly paid for by McDonald’s, while Domino’s pizza contribute towards our after-match teas saving a huge amount on the annual outgoings for the club.

The junior section of Caradon continues to go from strength to strength, ever increasing in numbers with success on the pitch as the Under 10 Girls finished as champions and Under 12 Girls coming second, both now go on to the West In2 Hockey regional finals in Bristol at the end of this month. Our junior collective increased so much we had to change training nights so that the juniors had a two hour long Monday night session, while the seniors continued to train on a Wednesday night.

The entire season culminated in our End of Season Gala, which was also a celebration of our 10-year anniversary. We were honoured and delighted to welcome our special guest Kate Richardson-Walsh OBE who not only attended the evening dinner, giving an inspiring and entertaining speech, but she also spent the day as part of the Caradon Hockey Family – meeting juniors at our home pitch and supporting from the side lines, watching as our 1st team beat local rivals Tavistock.

It was a memorable day that will go down in Caradon’s history, as our Club of the Year award will also. With numbers in both the junior and senior parts of the club increasing, as well as side line support on a Saturday and general interest in the sport in this area growing with those numbers, the award has given us extra opportunities, new exposure and a positive outlook to the future and the next 10 years of Caradon Hockey Club.

This year’s England Hockey Awards dinner is taking place on Saturday 19th May at the Athena in Leicester and we encourage clubs across the country to come along and enjoy the fun filled evening celebrating everything hockey in this country.
