England Under-18 Boys made an emphatic start to the EuroHockey Youth Championships in Spain, beating Poland 7-0 in Santander.

Two goals from captain Morgan Males and another two from Stuart Rushmere underpinned the victory, while other strikes came from Stuart Kentwell, Josh Gravestock and Thomas Russel.

Head coach Martin Jones said: “It’s a successful result which gives us a platform to work on as we go into the more challenging games in the group.

“We got a result and there’s stuff to work on but nothing we aren’t capable of. The test series against Germany was successful and we look forward to the challenge.”

England got off to a great start with Males scoring the opening goal from a penalty corner in the third minute. And Rushmere doubled their lead in the 18th minute from open play.

Another field goal made it three-nil to England on 27 minutes, this time coming from Kentwell, and they made it four in the 40th minute with Gravestock firing home from open play.

Rushmere grabbed his second goal on 54 minutes – this time from a penalty corner routine – and five minutes later Russel put his name on the scoresheet from open play.

Finally, Males bagged his second from the penalty spot in the final minute to complete a strong victory.
