U16 Tier 2 Area Finals

U16 T2 - Girls North 2019
The Tier 2 championships offer an opportunity for teams to play competitive hockey against teams of a similar standard. The Area Finals bring together teams who performed well in the local leagues that run through the season.

Thanks to our amazing host clubs the U16 Tier 2 area finals held on Sunday 7th April, were a great success, giving our clubs’ U16 girls and boys the chance to demonstrate their superb levels of skill and sportsmanship.

Girls South Area Finals, Hosted by Epsom HC at Epsom College:
On the day, the final was between Eastbourne and Surbiton and it was an evenly balanced, competitive fixture, with both teams unbeaten until this point. Eastbourne soaked up a number of Surbiton attacks with their goalkeeper making some fine saves. Unfortunately neither side could beat the opposite goalkeeper and the final was decided by penalty strokes, with Eastbourne prevailing 5-3.

The 3rd/4th play off saw hosts Epsom pitted against Alton.  Again it was a highly competitive game, but Epsom edged ahead from a goalmouth melee before adding a second that was juggled and volleyed into the net.  Alton came back into the game but Epsom managed to seal the game with a well-worked third goal.

Two tired teams put on a real show for the spectators in the 5th vs 6th play off.  It was a real crowd pleaser with Trojans (photo below) edging out Teddington in a 4-3 goal-fest.

Girls West Area Finals, Hosted by Reading HC
In the West finals, Oxford remained unbeaten to clinch the title, scoring an impressive 12 goals and conceding only once in the process. Wotton Under Edge claimed second spot, narrowly edging out Maidenhead by one point. Reading, in spite of being the only team to take points from Oxford all day, had to make do with 4th place and Bristol Firebrands put up some spirited displays but ended up 5th.

Girls North Area Finals, hosted by Belper HC:
Belper HC hosted the Tier 2 Area Finals with teams from the Wirral, Cheshire, Shropshire areas. It was an impressive standard of hockey from all the teams involved and all the games were played in great spirit!
The final took place between Alderley Edge and Matlock and it was real end-to-end stuff culminating in a draw 1-1 at full time but Matlock were able to compose themselves enough to win the competition on flicks!

Girls East Area Finals, hosted by St Neots HC.
In the East competition three teams: St Neots, Bedford and Bishops Stortford played their finals as a three team round robin. All the games were high scoring, top quality matches with Bedford winning both their matches, taking first place and St Neots runners up. The games were played in good spirits, with the girls really enjoying their final experience.

Boys South Area Finals, Hosted by Reading HC
In the South finals day, the qualifying pools were close and high-scoring, with Jersey and Surbiton both conceding just one goal whilst winning all their pool matches. Jersey took the honours 3-0 in the final against Surbiton (photos below). Wycombe, who had been the highest scoring qualifying team then beat Reigate Priory in the 3rd/4th place play off, with Slough clinching 5th place against Blackheath & Elthamians.

England Hockey would like to thank the support of all the host clubs, the umpires and volunteers that made these area finals such a success and a great experience for the junior players.

The successful Jersey team.

Boys North Area Final, hosted by Stone HC.
The pool matches at the North area finals were all very competitive with some impressive hockey played. The last of the pool games featured Beeston and Timperley and with either team being able to qualify for the final it made for an interesting watch. Timperley's Goalkeeper was outstanding making save after save, but with Beeston creating numerous chances sooner or later one was bound to go in, and it did. As Beeston won both their group games they faced the other pool winner, Lichfield in the final.

The first of the placing matches was between Stone and Chester. Both teams commitment to the game was unwavering but a few tired legs were showing. Chester scored first and in the second half Stone's centre back scored a wonder strike into the roof of the net. Then in the final moments Chester scored a final goal giving them the victory 2-1 and leaving the hosts deflated.

The 3rd place play off with Timperley and Loughbourogh saw two 6ft captains shake hands at the start. Both teams displayed some excellent team spirit working hard for each other, communicating with each other and putting numerous passes together however the teams could not be separated by goals during the game. Thanks to some great saves Timperley won on flicks.

From the off it was clear to see the two teams that made the final deserved to be there. Both teams attacked with pace and skill, but defended with strength and precision. It ended 1-1 so another game had to be decided on flicks. Beeston won 4-3 on flicks.

Overall Stone played hosts to a fantastic day of hockey, all matches were competitive and played with great attitudes from all players and Stone were proud to be a part of it.

Boys Midlands Area Final, hosted by Old Silhillians
The Midlands finals day was between six teams split into two pools. One pool consisted of Bedford, Crostyx and Hampton in Arden and the other Old Sil/Stratford, Rugby and East Warwickshire and St Albans. The top three places were Old Sils/Stratford in third place (photo below), Rugby second and Hampton won on penalty flicks, a great day for hockey in Warwickshire.
