England Men's 045s take Home Nations Title in Glasgow

Eng 045s

The England Masters over 45s squad enjoyed a weekend of competitive hockey against Ireland, Wales and Scotland respectively, reclaiming the title from Ireland who had won it last year. We were lucky enough to play on the Commonwealth Games venue from 2018, which added to the importance of the tournament.

The tournament started brightly late on Friday afternoon with England coming out on top against last years winners running out winners 6-0 against Ireland. England came out of the blocks quickly, running out a 5-0 lead at half time. Ireland got over their jet lag and held England to only one goal in the last half. Simon Organ scored 2 goals, Brad King, Matt Boardman, Andrew Cook and Matt Clark each combining with one.

On Saturday we took on Wales who showed good spirited fight early and England were up 3-0 at half time. Organ and Boardman scoring a couple of short corners and King finishing off a nice whole team play. England stepped it up a gear in the second half, scoring 6 goals, including a hat trick from Cook in the space of 6 minutes. Organ continued his goal scoring, also netting a hat trick.

The scene was set for the final match, either team wins and they claim the title. England only needed a draw due to goal difference. England raced to a 2-0 lead with goals from Organ and Jonty Lawford. However Scotland scored in the last 30 seconds of the first quarter to come back into the game. A tough physical match saw it ebb and flow before Scotland pulled level at the start of the 4th quarter. Avery finished off a nice piece of work from King to take England ahead with 5 minutes to go, however Scotland and Paul Dailly completed his hat trick with a well worked short corner in the 70th minute. A very entertaining game that ultimately was settled with a even draw, however England claimed the title on their superior goal difference.

Summary of our goal scorers were as follows:

Simon Organ: 6

Andrew Cook: 4

Stuart Avery: 2

Matt Boardman: 2

Brad King: 2

Matt Clark: 1

Jonty Lawford: 1

We are pleased the Home Nations was successful through winning the Title, having missed out of in last year. We feel that we are also in a stronger place in preparation for the European Cup, to be held in Rotterdam in July this year.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank Fraser Auld and his team for putting on a very successful tournament. We thoroughly enjoyed playing on Commonwealth Games venue and it added a beautiful scene for the Home Nations tournaments.
