Report from European Cup Krefeld

Mixed success for the Women and Men’s 050s/55s squads in the European Championships with a Gold, two Silvers and a Bronze medal.

The Women’s 055s led the way with a Gold winning all their six matches, scoring 17 goals and only conceding one.  They beat Wales 1 – 0, The Netherlands 2 – 0 and The Alliance 4 – 1 to progress to the quarter finals.  After victories over Glebdutch 7 – 0 and then Wales to reach the final, they beat Scotland 2 – 0 to take the Gold medal.  Shaz Holton led the way with 4 goals for the English team.

Silver medals were achieved by the Women’s 050s and the Men’s over 55s.

The Women’s 50s got to the final with an impressive record of played 5, won 5, goals for 36 and goals against 1, with goals from Sarah Bamfield (9), Julia Butterworth (7) and  Amanada Gatherer (6).  However, in the final they came up against a tough Dutch side and in a close game unfortunately went down 2 – 0 to take Silver.

The Men’s 55s were undefeated in open play in the whole tournament, winning 4 games, scoring 12 goals and conceding only 1 before the final but unfortunately losing the gold medal on a shoot out to Germany after drawing 2 – 2.  Richard Purchase score 4 goals.

The Men’s 050s went into their semi-final against The Netherlands have won four games, scoring 29 goals and conceding only 1.  In a hard-fought match England went 3 – 1 up with 20 minutes to go but The Netherlands hit back to draw the game 3 – 3.  England then lost the shoot-out 3 – 4 to miss out on a final.  However, they did bounce back to claim Bronze with a 6 – 0 victory over Ireland.

This meant that over three European Tournaments England teams won 7 Golds, 4 Silvers and 4 Bronze medals following on from winning Gold at all the Home Nations Championships.  A very good season for the English Masters’ squads.

2020 will see all squads take part in World Cups with the 035/40 teams taking part in a ‘home’ World Cup in Nottingham next August.
