Futures Cup Underway at Cannock

The Saxon Tigers won both their opening matches in the boys and girls U18 competitions on Day One of the Futures Cup, with two convincing victories at Cannock Hockey Club, with Wessex Leopards’ boys and Mercia Lynx’s girls side also claiming victories.

The Saxon Tigers boys opened proceedings with a 4-1 win over the Pennine Pumas in the opening game on Pitch Two, while the first game of the girls competition saw the Mercia Lynx maul the Wessex Leopards in a 6-1 win to take control of the Girls U18 competition.

The second girls game saw the Saxon Tigers keep a clean sheet in a 4-0 win, as for the second time on Thursday the Tigers defeated the Pumas.  In the final game of the day the Wessex Leopards Boys side ran out 5-1 winners over the Mercia Lynx to ensure they finished the day top of the Boys U18 standings on goal difference.

Friday morning sees the U16 competition get underway at 11:00 with the U18 teams back in action on Friday afternoon.

Thanks to Man Group plc it’s free entry for spectators all weekend and with eight games taking place each day, there’s plenty of hockey for fans to watch.

Sunday also sees two extra events taking place as the Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay comes to Cannock as part of the build up to the 2010 Commonwealth Games, which take places in Delhi, India next October.

There’ll also be a chance to get up close to the EuroHockey Nations Championship trophy won by England’s Men in Amsterdam, as England Hockey’s Trophy Tour rolls into Cannock.  So if you’re coming along on Sunday, don’t forget your camera as there’ll be the chance to have your photo taken basking in the golden glow of England’s European victory.
