England's Stars on FIH Awards Shortlists

Two of England's stars have been listed among the nominees for the WorldHockey Player of the Year and WorldHockey Young Player of the Year awards.

England's Helen Richardson with her 100th cap before their international against Spain at Highfields Sports Club, Beeston, Nottingham, 13th June 2009Reading, England and Great Britain midfielder Helen Richardson has been named alongside Naomi van As (NED), Luciana Aymar (ARG), Madonna Blyth (AUS), Baorong Fu (CHN) and Natascha Keller (GER) in the main award's shortlist.

28 year old Helen, whose previous clubs have included Sherwood, West Bridgford, Leicester and Den Bosch, passed a century of England caps this summer and now has 114 England appearances to her name, as well as 54 for Great Britain.  She was an integral member of the England side that won bronze at the 2009 EuroHockey Nations Championships in August.

International teammate Susie Gilbert (pictured below right scoring against Azerbaijan) is also up for an FIH award after being listed on the shortlist for WorldHockey Young Player of the Year.  20 year old Susie, who plays her club hockey for University of Birmingham in the EHL Premier Division, was also a member of the bronze medal winning side in Amstelveen in August.

Susie Gilbert scores for England against Azerbaijan at the 2009 Women's EuroHockey Nations Championships in Amstelveen, Netherlands, 25 August 2009She has made 19 appearances for England and a further 12 for Great Britain.  Alongside her on the FIH shortlist are Casey Eastham (AUS), Gemma Flynn (NZL), Emilie Mol (NED), Miyuki Nakagawa (JPN) and Josefina Sruoga (ARG).

All athletes that participated at the Samsung Champions Trophy and the BDO Champions Challenge I were able to vote.  The winners will be announced during the men's ABN AMRO Champions Trophy in Melbourne, Australia.  The nominees for the Men’s Player of the Year and the Young Player of the Year will be released early December 2009.
