ENGLAND Under-16 boys made an emphatic start to their two-match series
against Scotland on Saturday, walloping their hosts 9-0 at Lilleshall National Sports Centre in Shropshire.

A strong team performance gave several reasons to be positive for the England team, with seven players sharing the nine goals, which came from across the pitch.

Cannock youngster Tom Morris opened their account with a goal from open play on 24 minutes, and England doubled their lead just before half time with Morris’s team-mate at Cannock Arjan Drayton-Chana scoring on 33 minutes, again from free play.

Old Georgians’ James Gall secured a third goal a minute after play resumed, and Rob Farrington made it 4-0, the Bromley and Beckenham ace netting from open play on 39 minutes.

The fifth came on 47 minutes from Cirencester’s Tom Groombridge, and Ben
Rhydding’s Sam French added another from a penalty corner on 51 minutes to put England six-nil ahead.

Bournemouth star Albert Thornton scored on 60 minutes, and in the final ten
minutes Morris and French both scored their second goals, on 65 and 70 minutes, to complete a comfortable victory.

“The boys dominated the game throughout,” said team manager Dieter Hill. “In fact in the second half I think they could’ve done more to attack and put away their chances. But it’s good to see a spread of goals across the team.

“We’ve got Germany in ten days, so we’re focusing on that and we’ve still got work to do before that. There were patches in either half where Scotland had possession that we shouldn’t have let them have, so we have some things to iron out.”

AFTER dishing out a 9-0 drubbing to Scotland on Saturday, England Under-16
boys went one better on Sunday, beating their Scotland counterparts 10-0 in the
last of their two-match test series at Lilleshall National Sports Centre.
A hat-trick from Cannock’s Tom Morris was the highlight of a match where England
battled well and showed great character to remain focused on their play right to the
end.

“The intensity was solid throughout,” said team manager Dieter Hill. “We continued
to create chances and put into practice the points that had been raised after
Saturday.

“Their attitude was second to none. After winning 9-0 the day before they could’ve
sat back, but their concentration was of the top order.”

Morris opened the scoring after three minutes, and the second followed on five
minutes with East Grinstead’s Luke Taylor scoring from a short corner.
Morris added his second on 18 minutes - again from open play - and England were
5-0 ahead at half time following a 25th minute corner from Sam French and a 26th
minute goal from open play from Joe Sharp.

The goals continued to flow after the break, with Ted Bennett scoring from a corner
on 41 minutes, and after Arjan Drayton-Chana had added another on 61 minutes,
Morris completed his hat-trick.

Morris beat three Scotland players as he dashed down the right, and cut into the D
before smashing the ball into the top right corner for a brilliant solo effort.

However, England were not done yet and Bennett added his second on 67 minutes
before Chester’s Huw Barrett added his name to the scoresheet with a 70th minute
penalty corner.
