Dr William (Bill) Griffiths

Dr Griffiths was a hockey Blue at Cambridge and following the war returned to Wales to complete his medical studies, playing for Newport Athletic and subsequently Abergavenny. By this time he had won the first of his 32 Welsh caps, two of which were played at his home ground. 

Griffiths also represented Great Britain and was a member of the silver medal winning squad in the 1948 Olympics having played in all five matches.

He was President of Abergavenny from 1967 – 2007 and, upon his retirement the incoming President Trevor Scott, played tribute to Bill saying: “We have been very, very fortunate to have had such a distinguished sportsman and gentleman to be our President. It will be a hard act to follow.”

Dr Griffiths died Wednesday 27th October. The funeral will be held at St. Mary’s Priory Church, Abergavenny at 14:45 on Thursday 4th November.
