WHU seeks Senior Women's Head Coach

The Welsh Hockey Union (WHU) is the National Governing Body of Sport for Hockey in Wales. Exciting times are here, 2010 brought many successes on and off the pitch. Hockey is an Olympic Sport and with London 2012 on the horizon we have a fantastic opportunity to drive forward Hockey across Wales.

The Head Coach of the Senior Women’s Team will be responsible for:
  • Delivering high quality coaching to the selected athletes 
  • Creating a performance environment for athletes instilling performance behaviours 
  • Providing leadership to athletes identified for the Welsh Women’s Squad 
  • Providing leadership to all squad management team members within the programme 
  • Providing feedback to athletes, assistant coaches, managers and other support staff within the programme 
  • Coordinating and managing the S & C, medical and rehabilitation programmes 
  • Leading the Senior Women’s squad into competitions Providing evaluation reports following competition for athletes and staff
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the following:

(Proof of these will need to be brought to interview) 
  • UKCC Level 3 Coach (Hockey) or above 
  • Current First Aid Certificate 
  • Current Driving Licence / ability to travel in Wales and internationally
  • Minimum of 3 years relevant coaching experience of which at least 2 years must have been with national/high performance athletes and has led a programme which included athlete development within a performance environment and line management of staff 
  • Development of athletes including; auditing of strengths and weaknesses, producing personal development plans, monitoring performance, providing feedback and producing reports
  • Current standards techniques and tactics in Performance hockey 
  • A sound understanding of good practice
Planning and Delivery 
  • Ability to work with others to plan individual athlete programmes 
  • Ability to work with other specialists in order to deliver an integrated programme (e.g. Strength and Conditioning coaches) 
  • Ability to monitor, reflect and report on the programme 
  • Ability to prioritise the athletes needs
Communication and Leadership
  • Is able to communicate openly, honestly, diplomatically and persuasively 
  • Is approachable and is a good listener Is able to deal with conflict, ambiguity and information in an appropriate and positive manner
  • Is able to instill discipline
  • Is decisive and is willing to take responsibility for all areas of the role
  • Has effective people management skills and the ability to implement innovative ideas and solve relevant issues
  • Has an understanding of how to develop team culture, behaviours and values and can vary approaches to develop very best performance
  • Shows integrity and is fair, equitable and ethical in approach
  • Protects confidential information, adheres to policies, demonstrates loyalty to sport and Welsh Hockey
Organisation and Decision Making
  • Has demonstrated problem solving and decision making skills with the ability to plan and set clear and meaningful targets
  • Has ability to plan effectively in both short and long term
  • Has knowledge of, and experience of applying, various monitoring and evaluation techniques
  • Has effective time management skills
  • Is able to work effectively under pressure
  • Personal Is willing to work irregular hours and travel extensively within the UK and abroad with overnight stays and weekend working
  • Is able to attend all planned squad training sessions
  • Is able to negotiate periods of absence from any paid employment to attend training and competition commitments with the Squad.
  • Is conversant with Safeguarding Duty of Care and welfare requirements
