Cheam Hockey Club is looking to appoint an enthusiastic and reliable Junior Head Coach to support and develop our thriving junior section.
Based in Surrey, Cheam Hockey Club has around 160 junior players from U8 to U16, with teams competing in the London Leagues. We are looking for a coach who is passionate about youth development and who can help us continue to provide a positive, safe and enjoyable environment where young players can learn, improve and grow their love of hockey.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to play a key role in shaping and enhancing an established junior coaching setup, working closely with our volunteer coaches, parents and junior committee.
The Role
The Junior Head Coach will be responsible for leading the coaching programme for our U16 boys’ and girls’ squads, while also supporting coaches across the wider junior section.
The successful candidate will deliver engaging, structured and enjoyable coaching sessions, helping players develop their technical skills, tactical understanding, confidence and teamwork. They will also support other junior coaches with session planning, player development and coaching ideas across different age groups and abilities.
Coaching Commitment
- Sunday mornings: 9:00am to 12:30pm
- Potential Wednesday evening junior training: 7:00pm to 8:00pm, to be confirmed
- Season: September to March
- Attendance at U16 matches, approximately once per month per U16 squad (2 teams)
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver structured, fun and progressive training sessions for the U16 age groups.
- Support player development across a range of ages and abilities.
- Work with coaches, volunteers and parents to support coach development across the junior section.
- Help create a positive, inclusive and enjoyable learning environment for all junior players.
- Promote teamwork, confidence, commitment and enjoyment of the game.
- Maintain a strong commitment to safeguarding, player welfare and good coaching practice.
- Attend U16 matches as required during the season.
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for someone who has:
- Experience coaching children and young people.
- A genuine passion for youth hockey and developing young players.
- England Hockey coaching qualifications, or equivalent experience.
- Strong communication and organisational skills.
- A positive, supportive and team-focused approach.
- Reliability and commitment throughout the season.
- A current DBS check and first aid certificate, or willingness to complete these before starting.
