EHL Premier Division Review | Week Three

Old Georgians and Wimbledon go into EuroHockey League action next weekend after playing out a 1-1 draw on Saturday. OGs had beaten Reading 3-0 on Thursday and Sam Ward gave them a first half lead before Euan Gilmour levelled things up in the second, the first goal they have conceded this season. Surbiton are two points back but have played a game fewer. They maintained a 100% record with their 4-1 win at Holcombe. They trailed to an early Teague Marcano goal at half time but scored four in the second including two for Nick Bandurak against his former colleagues.

Elsewhere after two weeks with no draws, there were three. Reading earned their first point of the season in a 2-2 draw at Hampstead & Westminster. It was the same scoreline at Oxted where Peter Jarvis put the home team two up in 20 minutes but Southgate came back to level things up. Brooklands MU also earned their first point from a 1-1 draw  on their trip to East Grinstead and followed this up with a 3-1 defeat of Southgate in Sunday’s rearranged game at home, the teams both travelling 230+ miles after Saturday’s games.  Peter Flanagan, Dan Vincent and Carlon Mentoor, who’d netted Saturday’s opener, scored second half goals to give the Cheshire side all three points.  Cardiff & Met beat Beeston for the first time, a 2-1 win meaning Beeston are the only team without a point to date this season.

Catherine Ledesma hit a hat-trick for Hampstead and Miriam Pritchard kept her third successive clean sheet in the win. Previous leaders Surbiton were held 3-3 at East Grinstead. Surbiton grabbed a 2-0 half time lead with Maddie Axford netting both goals, the third year running she has scored against EG, the last two years for Nottingham University. When Erica Sanders added a third with just over 20 minutes left it looked like game over but Biba Mills hit a hat-trick in just 13 minutes to tie things up. Surbiton have not surrendered a three goal lead before. There was another high scoring draw at Birmingham University where the home team drew 4-4 with Wimbledon, the visitors coming from 2-0 and 4-2 down. Birmingham’s Coca Hall and Wimbledon’s Flo Fletcher have scored in their teams’ first three fixtures this season.

Bowdon earned their first points of the season and inflicted a first defeat on Durham University with a 3-2 win. Bowdon had failed to score in their first two matches but were three up inside 30 minutes thanks to goals from Hannah Grieve, Lauren Burrell and Jaimee Eades. There were late goals from Durham, including another for the Division’s top scorer Lizzy Pocknell, but Bowdon held on. A Hannah Boss goal was enough for Loughborough Students to beat Barnes 1-0, Barnes remain without a point or goal to date since promotion to the top flight. They sit just above Nottingham University who were beaten 3-1 at home by Reading with two goals in the last 10 minutes from Meg Crowson proving decisive.
