Westbrook hat-trick helps Southgate reach quarter finals

ANDREW Westbrook scored a hat-trick of goals for Southgate as the Premier Division outfit battled their way into the fourth round of the England Hockey Men’s Cup with a 7-5 win at Preston on Sunday.

Their North Conference hosts fought back strongly in the second half in search of a place in the quarter finals, but the experience of the Premier Division side proved too strong.

Preston added further goals through Adam Wilson, Robin Taylor, Sam Sinclair and Owen Fletcher, but it was not quite enough for victory with Southgate adding other scores from Kevin Haigh, Matt Wells, Johannes Kloess and Niki Lange.

Paul Pongs scored twice, while others came from Mark Daniel, David Egerton, Nigel Croke, Thorsten Kuffner and Sam Mee.

Bottom of the East Conference, Bromley and Beckenham underlined their promise when they beat East rivals City of Peterborough 5-2 in their Men’s Cup clash.

They led 2-0 at half time with Ben Allberry having scored from open play on 4 and 33 minutes.

Bromley and Beckenham doubled their lead through Nick Bluett and Chris Barnett before Peterborough hit back with Gareth Andrew scoring on 64 minutes.

James Granell made it 5-1 to the home side on 68 minutes, but the final word went to Peterborough, for whom Andrew scored a consolation in the dying seconds.

After scoring two league goals on Saturday, Patrick Schmidt added two Cup goals on Sunday to help Beeston win 6-1 at Fareham.

Schmidt, Martin Jones and Jonathan Beckers scored in the first half to put their side 3-1 ahead, with Craig Peel scoring for the home side.

But after the break they took control with Schmidt and Jones both adding second goals, while Gordon McIntyre also netted.

David Mathews scored four goals in Canterbury’s 6-2 win at Oxford Hawks, while Liam Foster and Nathaniel Joy also scored.

Cannock beat hosts Brighton and Hove 3-1, with goals coming from Oliver Westbrook, Arjan Drayton Chana and Tom Moores.
