GB women to go stateside

Great Britain women’s hockey Head Coach Danny Kerry has named a 24 athlete squad for a pre-Christmas training camp in San Diego next month.

The two week trip to California will see Great Britain undertake warm weather training and play a series of five matches against fellow Olympic Games qualifiers USA. Included in the group is Canterbury’s Dilly Newton, in line for her first competitive senior international match, and University of Birmingham’s Susie Gilbert and Leicester’s Katie Long, who both missed out on the EuroHockey Nations Championships in the summer through injury.

Subject to appearances in the matches, Leicester’s Crista Cullen is in line to make her 150th international appearance, combining appearances for both Great Britain and England while Bowdon Hightown’s Sally Walton is likely to make her 100th appearance on the international stage.

Kerry said, “We are looking forward to our training and test matches in San Diego against the USA.  The USA team is dynamic, hard working and to a player they are all competitors which will lead to keenly contested matches.  The USA come off the back of defeating Argentina in the Pan Am finals and will bring that experience and confidence to the test series.

“For the first time in this Olympic cycle, the trip allows the Great Britain team to compete in a test series overseas.  Having missed out on selection through injury in the summer, a number of players also get an opportunity.  We will continue to develop our level of team play and train hard between the matches.  The relative warmth of San Diego compared to a British winter will also guarantee us a good two week training environment."

The team departs for San Diego on Monday 5 December with matches due to take place during the second week.
