Reigning champs prepare for Maxifuel action

REIGNING champions East Grinstead will field a side littered with internationals as they start their defence of hockey’s indoor Men’s Maxifuel Super Sixes Championships in Staffordshire on Saturday.

Captained by double Olympian Glenn Kirkham, East Grinstead boast another six GB internationals in vice-captain Ashley Jackson, Mark Pearn, Niall Stott and Adam Harper, plus Mark Gleghorne and Richard Smith who have recently returned from representing England at the Champions Trophy in Australia.

East Grinstead have won the final for the last four years, and manager Matt Jones said: “It will be very open and exciting this year. We see the indoor league as being a vital part of our programme.”

An action-packed weekend of quickfire matches is on the cards at St George’s Park in Burton upon Trent, with many of the stars of last summer’s Olympics turning out for the tournament which sees nine 40-minute matches each day, offering crowds a high-energy hockey experience with goals aplenty.

“First we want to be in the top four and make it to the finals at Wembley, and then anything can happen,” added Jones.

“We’ve had a very challenging season outdoors, which has been unprecedented in terms of injuries and unavailability because of the post-Olympic blues.

“We’ve put out a very strong team for this weekend, but I fully expect Beeston, Reading and Canterbury to be strong – partly due to experience more than anything.”

Missing for East Grinstead this time is GB ace Barry Middleton who will turn out for his home town club Doncaster for the first time in years, while another London 2012 hero Nick Catlin plays for Reading alongside four others with GB honours - captain Richard Springham, Simon Mantell, Stephen Dick and Darren Cheesman.

Currently leading the outdoor Men’s Hockey League Premier Division, Beeston were the beaten finalists in last year’s Maxifuel Super Sixes Finals, and they field a strong side which includes the current top-scorer in the outdoor league, Simon Egerton, who has 17 goals.
