The Investec Women’s Knockout Finals get underway on Saturday with Guernsey and Oxted battling it out in the Investec Vase Final.  Guernsey finished runners-up in 2010-11 having lost out by the odd goal to Alderley Edge; they’ll be looking to go one better this weekend but face a stern test against reigning champions Oxted. If Oxted were to retain the title, they’d become only the second team to record back to back Vase Final victories – East Grinstead achieved that feat in 2008-09 and 2009-10. Guernsey had to work hard to earn a place in the final having overcome Andover in a penalty shootout, following a 3-3 draw, whilst Oxted secured a narrow 2-1 victory over West Bridgford in their Semi-Final.

There’s a local derby in the second game of the day, the Investec Trophy Final. The competition has a fine pedigree of winners with Investec Women’s Hockey League clubs University of Birmingham, Brooklands Poynton, Buckingham and Wimbledon all having been previous winners. It is a first trip to the finals for both sides who won through in narrow semi-final victories. Henley hosted North Notts and ran out 3-2 winners whilst Sonning’s home semi-final against Bishop’s Stortford ended 1-0. For Sonning, it will be an exciting challenge in facing a Henley side that plays a division higher in the South Club’s Women’s Hockey League.

There’s an all Investec Premier Division clash in the Investec Cup which sees Bowdon Hightown face Clifton. Both sides have a history in the Investec Cup, with Bowdon Hightown having appeared in 9 finals and Clifton 5. For Bowdon Hightown, of those 9 appearances 8 have resulted in a trophy lift, their last in 2010-11 in a 4-1 victory over Surbiton. Clifton, meanwhile, has suffered more mixed fortunes, of their five trips to the final they’ve been crowned champions twice; their last triumph came in 1999-00. Bowdon Hightown came through a 2-0 victory over Buckingham to qualify for the final whilst Clifton was forced into extra time and penalty strokes with Sutton Coldfield before they were able to cement their place. In the Investec Premier Division this season, their two matchups ended in draws – 1-1 and 2-2 – and Bowdon Hightown finished 5th with Clifton 6th, so there’s little to choose between the two in this grandstand final.

The first game on Sunday is the Masters Over 35’s Shield Final pitting two Midlands sides in Derby Asterdale and Northampton Saints together. It’s the inaugural final in this competition and Northampton Saints required a 5-1 victory over Wolverhampton & Tettenhall in the Semi-Final to progress through to meet Derby Asterdale.

In the Investec Women’s Masters Over 35’s Plate Final, Wimbledon meets St. Albans. It is the fourth final in the competition since its inception in 2009-10 when Wimbledon was crowned first winners following a penalty strokes victory over Kettering. Wimbledon was defeated in the Investec Women’s Masters Over 35’s Cup by finalists Canterbury. Both sides recorded convincing semi-final triumphs with Wimbledon winning 7-1 against Pendle Forest and St. Albans 8-1 over Pelicans.

Reigning champions Canterbury return in the Investec Women’s Masters Over 35’s Cup having defeated Exe 4-2 in last season’s final. Canterbury recorded a narrow 1-0 victory over Cambridge City to earn their place in the final to face Towcester. For Northamptonshire side Towcester, a 4-2 victory over Epsom in the Semi-Final was enough to book their spot at the Investec Women’s Knockout Finals Weekend at Highfields Sports Club.

Hereford and Oxford compete in the last game of the Investec Women’s Knockout Finals, the Women’s Masters Over 35’s Trophy which is also the second inaugural final of the day. Hereford won through to the final thanks to a penalty strokes victory over Driffield whilst Oxford had beaten Shield finalists Northampton Saints in the first round of the competition.
