Walking Hockey Story Image
You may not realise it but May is national walking month!

Walking has a whole host of different health benefits such as a full body work out, being good for mental health and helping to reduce weight.
Walking Hockey is an emerging a way to play the game, clubs up and down the country hosting Walking Hockey sessions for the first time this summer as part of the Your World Cup campaign.

Keynsham Hockey Club in Somerset is trying out Walking Hockey for the first time. They kicked off their sessions by hosting their inaugural Jo Bush Memorial Walking Hockey Festival in April.
The club have some older players who were thinking of retiring from the sport so thought it would be a good idea to run Walking Hockey sessions to provide them, and other members of the local community with a opportunity to play hockey for longer.

Teams entered the Walking Festival from Keynsham Hockey Club; Bromsgrove Hockey Club; Corsham Hockey Club as well as friends, family and members of the local community.

The festival was held in memory of Jo Bush, a much loved member of the club who held several positions over the years including Chairperson, raising funds for Dorothy House Hospice Care the charity chosen by Jo’s family.
The spirit of the festival was about having fun, connecting with old and new friends and enjoying the game at a different pace.

The day comprised of a series of short matches played in a round robin format. The winners of the festival were Bromsgrove no.1’s who made the 150 mile round trip to play!

Andrea Harding from Keynsham Hockey Club said “For anyone who has yet to experience a walking sport, it is surprisingly difficult not to run! The event could not have happened without the support of so many of our Keynsham Hockey Club members. It was a delight to see people of all ages playing together and having fun.”

Due to the success of the Walking Hockey Festival Keynsham Hockey Club will be running regular Walking Hockey sessions in the future and are already planning their 2019 Walking Hockey Festival! If your club are interested in attending contact the club: walkinghockey@keynshamhockey.club
