Watton HC vs The Household Cavalry

Watton HC, based in Breckland, Norfolk are a medium-sized club competing throughout the East Anglian League Structure. With three senior ladies teams, a girls development side & a men’s team, we have been established since the mid 1970’s.

Every year, The Household Cavalry are stationed at Bodney Military Camp, Norfolk for their Summer training schedule.  For the very first time, Watton HC were lucky enough to face the regiment in a mixed hockey exhibition match on July 2.

Many of the Household were new to the sport, however the match was played in great spirits, with a huge variety of abilities on the pitch at any one time. This has now spurred the regiment to start an official hockey team to prepare for the re-match next summer.

All proceeds from the fixture were donated to the fantastic Household Cavalry Foundation, supporting soldiers, veterans and horses of the regiment.

The event also brought in many spectators who would not normally watch local hockey as well as many friends and family of the club.

“The planned match against the Household Cavalry was a great opportunity for the club to promote hockey within the community, to show the public and prospective players  that hockey is fun, social and accessible to all. Many of the Household Cavalry players had never played before but were keen to pick up a stick and give it a go, lots of players keen to come back next year for a rematch." - Grant Harwood, Umpire
