Stourport Hockey Club Help Raise Money For 'Go For Gold' Campaign

Stourport Hockey Club hosted their first-ever Club day on 4 September at the Sports Club, Kingsway, Stourport. The club invited juniors, parents, adults, past and present players to join in the day of quality mixed hockey, and, in total over 170 people turned up to enjoy the sunshine, play or spectate.

Special guests included Club Vice Presidents and life members with special VIP guests Imran Sherwani and his wife Louise. Imran was a decisive player for Stourport during the peak of his hockey career in the 1980’s and 1990’s, where he achieved Olympic Gold in Seoul 1988.

Despite a series of lockdowns over the last year, the club had organised some successful intraclub and summer league games in recent months, but this event was very much focused on giving the 21/22 season a great kick-off and raise some donations in the process.

Alzheimer’s Research UK (ARUK) also attended to help raise funds in aid of Imran’s campaign which he recently launched on National TV and featured in the Shuttle.

The fundraising continues until Sunday 3 October when Zac (Imran’s son) competes in the London Marathon.

It was such a fantastic day to see people of all ages and abilities get together, pick up their sticks and enjoy some fun to play in the sunshine; just the tonic many needed after the recent 12 months of lockdown

Earlier this year the former Great Britain and England player and 1988 Olympic gold medallist Imran Sherwani revealed that he was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s in December 2019, aged just 57.

A team led by fellow Seoul gold medal winner Steve Batchelor and Imran’s son Zac has been assembled to take on the Virgin Money London Marathon in October to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK.

“I am now at the end of the journey which started for me on 10 February 2021 when I decided to run in the London Marathon for my teammate Imran Sherwani. An amazing experience with so many of you generously supporting ARUK. Only 26.2 miles to go“ said Steve.

Kelly Holliday from Alzheimer’s Research UK said when speaking about Stourports event “We are so pleased with the fundraising campaign that Stourport Hockey launched in aid of our charity. It has been so successful to date, raising over £1,600. Imran together with Louise are very appreciative of the support from all of the club members, sending their sincere thanks to all”
