Reading Hockey Club hosted the England Hockey U14 & U18 Club Championships over May 11 and 12 as teams battled it out to win some silverware.

U14 Boys

The weekend’s action began with the U14 Boys Junior Club Championships as Surbiton emphatically claimed the title with a 4-0 victory over Old Loughtonians in the final.

Surbiton looked dominant as they raced to the title, scoring 11 goals over the day without conceding any, as they topped Pool A and emerged as victors in the final.

Old Loughtonians had enjoyed a strong start to the competition as they topped Pool B with two wins and a draw. However, four Surbiton goals inside the opening twenty minutes from Martijn Boomsma, Dylan Parry, Caspar Beyer and Ollie Neal put a final victory out of reach.

U14 Girls

In an extremely close game in the U14 Girls Junior Club Championship, Surbiton secured a second trophy of the weekend as they defeated Sevenoaks 7-6 in a shootout following a 0-0 regular time draw.

Both sides progressed through their Pools undefeated, Surbiton winning all three matches in Pool B with Sevenoaks drawing one in Pool A with the teams looking strong as they advanced to the final.

Sevenoaks topped the goalscoring charts, Annabel Cheveley notching five of the team’s 12 goals, however were unable to find a way through a stubborn Surbiton defence who only conceded one goal throughout the competition on their way to lifting the trophy.

U18 Boys

In contrast, the Boys U18 Club Championships Finals saw a feast of goals over the two days.

Guildford were the first time to claim silverware as they defeated Cheltenham 3-1 in the T1 final. William Tristem and Will Ferguson scored within minutes of each other in the second period after captain Raphael Boulanger had given the side a first-half lead, though Cheltenham did reply through Daniel Marshall with fifty minutes on the clock it was only to be a consolation.

A thrilling T2 final was won by Old Loughtonians as they topped Lichfield 4-3 in an action-packed game.

Freddie Britt bagged a brace with goals either side of Joseph Ahern and Matthew Lewis’ strike with his first goal coming in the second-minute to give Old Loughtonians an early lead. Lichfield found themselves 4-1 down with less than ten minutes remaining, and though they made a good fist of it with two late goals, there was to be no comeback.

The T3 final was a more one-sided encounter as Marden Russets cruised past Reading B with a 5-0 victory.

Going into the half-time break 3-0 up, braces from Louis Ridge and Ben Errington, as well as a sole strike from Joe Palmer saw Marden Russets comfortably secure the trophy.

Team Bath Buccaneers started the action an 8-1 thrashing of Sadbury in the T2 Final on the Saturday. Sophie Hamilton and Ursula Olsen-Groome bagged braces, captain Olivia Hamilton netted a hattrick whilst Alice Dymond and Lizzie White also added one of their own to secure a big victory.
