Team of the Week - Round 19

Team of the week 2019/20
Another week of incredible nominations and tough decisions with the Goalkeeper nominations being the hardest to choose from.

This week we had the commitment, outstanding performances, nerves of steel and performances that didn't go unnoticed.

Goalkeeper
Name: Ben Guildford
Club: Sandbach HC
Nomination: Ben is one of the most committed player. The man turns up to training in the rain, sleet and snow. He is a huge influence and helps get the best out of every single person. Ben plays in goal and it has been said that he is like Vinnie Jones and Martin Keown love child. Last season he was a centre forward bagging goals in the 2s and in the space of a year he’s dethroned the first team keeper of 6 years and is about to take the captaincy.
A meteoric rise for this one-time division 8 bandit and to top things off he achieved a lovely clean sheet and a 5-0 win to finish the season.

Defence
Name: Stacey Turner
Club: Tadcaster Magnets HC
Nomination: Stacey is a rock. She leads by example and is a solid centre back. This season Stacey lead by example and helped lead the team to the title in the Yorkshire division 2 league.

Stacey Turner

Name: Warren Scott
Club: Amersham & Chalfont HC
Nomination: A club stalwart who will cover just about any position on the pitch. This season he has captained the Men’s 2s to their third successive promotion in as many years. Warren deserves a fantastic and well-deserved reward for all the hard work and dedication that has gone into getting a team out each week!

Midfield
Name: Dylan Evans
Club: Taw Valley HC
Nomination: Dylan is just 12 year old and has proved to be an important member of the small yet mighty club at the Devon Under 12 Championships. He has struggled with his hockey confidence in recent weeks but stepped up to the plate and committed to every pass and tackle. He timed his runs well and managed to score an absolute cracker. I don't think he knows how good he was today. He was so determined to make an impact he scuffed his knee on the pitch but carried on playing regardless. Testament to his spirit and drive. Well done Dylan we're all very proud of you.

Name: Peter Wingate
Club: Portsmouth HC
Nomination: Peter is captain of a newley formed 4th team after a merge. It is their first season together and Peter led a team of U18s with a few old hands to top of the table and promotion, capped by a 9-0 win. He is a constant powerhouse in midfield and the team would not have been the success it was without his work rate, both on and off the pitch.

Peter Wingate

Peter Wingate 3

Name: Martin Metcalfe
Club: Gravesham & Wellcome HC
Nomination:  Martin assisted the first goal to make it 1-0. Later in the game at 2-2 and the pressure on, the ball broke from GW defence, a sweeping passing move forward, Martin collected and drove forward, skipped past the defence and calmly slotted the ball into the top right bin on his reverse stick from just inside the top D with 5 mins left to play. A “worldie” and goal of the season contender. The team held out to win the game 3-2 and ending the “invincible” unbeaten run of the opposition. A fantastic goal and a great win to end the season for the GW Unicorns.

Martin Metcalfe

Name: Kelly Bryant
Club: Leighton Buzzard HC
Nomination: Kelly smashes it every week. She drives down the line with her one handed hits. She is always a positive person on and off the pitch and for this match she drove back from her holiday to play on her birthday and help secure a 2-0 win to be CHAMPIONS of our league!

Kelly Bryant

Attack
Name: Jake Davies
Club: Epsom HC
Nomination: A must win game vs London Academicals in South Prem 2 East. Jake steps up for an important penalty flick as the game sits at a draw. Jake has never taken one before but he has nerves of steel and scores. His day didn’t end there as he secured the win for his team with a killer drag flick. - https://twitter.com/Jamesmidmer/status/1239136994808270848

Name: Katie Beale
Club: Taunton Vale HC
Nomination: Katie is only 16 years old but made a huge impact throughout the game. She read the game to step forward and interception the ball, she created dynamic forward runs with the ball and helped her team to the end.

Name: Megan Moore
Club: Spalding HC
Nomination: At only 15 years old Megan has had a fantastic first league game in the Spalding Hockey Ladies’ 1st team. She is a willing runner, she makes tenacious tackler and holds the ball up well. She is showing great promise for the future and gained 11 player of the match votes.

Name: Sarai Howkins
Club: Tunbridge Wells HC
Nomination: Sarai is an amazing centre forward who is fitter and faster than the junior players that she leads and organises every Saturday. At 54 years old she is still in a battle with a 17 year old for this season's top goal scorer with a hat trick today. She is a brilliant player.
