Director of Hockey
Sikh Union Coventry Hockey Club Coventry (Midlands)Reports to: Club Chairperson / Executive Committee
Time Commitment: Approx. 6–10 hours per week (flexible, with seasonal variation)
Remuneration: Voluntary (reasonable expenses may be reimbursed)
Term: 1–3 years recommended
Role Purpose: To lead the overall direction and development of hockey at Sikh Union, ensuring a positive, inclusive, and progressive environment for players and coaches at all levels. The Director of Hockey is a key member of the club’s committee, responsible for shaping and delivering the club’s hockey strategy across senior, junior and social sections.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Strategic Leadership
- Develop and implement a hockey development plan aligned with the club’s vision and England Hockey guidance.
- Advise the club committee on hockey-related decisions and future planning.
- Lead on key hockey projects such as player development pathways, coaching structures, and recruitment initiatives.
2. Coaching & Playing Development
- Support the recruitment, retention, and development of coaches across all age groups.
- Help ensure consistent, high-quality training sessions and playing opportunities.
- Oversee coordination between junior and senior sections to support long-term player progression.
3. Player Pathways & Participation
Support a clear development pathway from junior to adult hockey.
Encourage inclusive participation in all forms of hockey (e.g. junior, adult, masters, social).
Liaise with schools, universities, and community partners to promote recruitment and partnerships.
4. Volunteer & Club Support
- Work with team captains, lead coaches, and age group coordinators to ensure smooth running of hockey operations.
- Attend committee meetings and contribute to club governance.
- Collaborate with the Club Welfare Officer to ensure safeguarding policies are upheld.
5. Communication & Culture
- Be a positive ambassador for the club’s values on and off the pitch.
- Encourage strong communication between teams, coaches, players, and the committee.
- Support a culture of respect, inclusion, and continuous improvement.
Essential Skills:
- Experience in playing, coaching, or managing hockey at club or school level.
- Good understanding of club hockey environments and development needs.
- Strong organisational, leadership, and communication skills.
- Willingness to work as part of a volunteer-led team and support others.
Desirable Skills:
- England Hockey Coach qualification (Level 3 or above) or equivalent experience.
- Experience mentoring coaches or developing playing structures.
- Understanding of safeguarding and equality in sport.
- Familiarity with England Hockey’s Talent Pathway frameworks.
