Reports to: Derby Hockey Club Committee & Union of Students (University of Derby) 

Role Overview

This is a unique opportunity for a motivated and forward-thinking Hockey Coach to take responsibility for both the University of Derby Men’s Team and the Derby Hockey Club Men’s Section.

The role offers the chance to work across university and club environments, creating a shared playing philosophy and strong identity while supporting player development and competitive performance. The successful candidate will have the freedom to put their own stamp on how the teams train, play, and progress.

Key Responsibilities

Coaching & Training

Plan and deliver high-quality weekly coaching sessions:

  • Mondays (7:00–8:30pm): University of Derby Men’s Team
  • Tuesdays (7:00–8:30pm): Derby Hockey Club Men’s Section (four men’s teams)
  • Design inclusive, progressive sessions that cater for a wide range of abilities and ambitions.
  • Implement a consistent playing style and coaching philosophy across both programmes.


Matchday Support

Provide Wednesday matchday support (where possible) for University of Derby Men’s 1st including:

  • Tactical preparation and team talks
  • In-game coaching and decision making
  • Post-match analysis and feedback

Provide Saturday matchday support for Derby Hockey Club Men’s 1st XI, including:

  • Tactical preparation and team talks
  • In-game coaching and decision-making
  • Post-match analysis and feedback
  • Player & Programme Development

 

  • Develop players technically, tactically, physically, and mentally.
  • Support pathways between university and club hockey where appropriate.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and competitive environment within both squads.

Leadership & Communication

Work closely with captains, team managers, and committee members.
Contribute to the long-term development of the men’s section and university programme.
Act as a positive ambassador for University of Derby and Derby Hockey Club.

Person Specification

Essential:

Strong understanding of modern hockey principles and tactics
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to motivate and manage players of varying standards
Availability on Monday and Tuesday evenings and Wednesdays (where possible) and Saturdays
Level 2 (sessional coach) or equivalent 

Desirable:

First Aid and Safeguarding qualifications 
Desire to shape and develop a clear hockey identity across programmes
