Ollie Payne shot to international prominence after first being called up to the senior Great Britain squad in July 2020, making his GB debut that October and quickly becoming a mainstay of the side, winning plaudits for his spectacular reflexes, outstanding agility and impressive calmness. That form culminated in his selection for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in the summer of 2021.
A graduate of the GB Elite Development Programme, the former Dart HC player was part of the U21 squads that won the Sultan of Johor Cup in 2018 and 2019, being named Goalkeeper of the Tournament in the latter, and helped England's U21s to a stunning silver medal at the 2019 EuroHockey Championships. He also shone for Durham University when they won the 2018 BUCS Championship title after a shootout.
Ollie was England's first-choice goalkeeper at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, taking over from long-serving George Pinner and helping the side to a bronze medal on home soil. He reached the final of the 2023 EuroHockey Championship with England and was instrumental in helping Great Britain qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
He went on to represent Great Britain at the Paris 2024 Olympics, his second Games after Tokyo 2020, with the campaign ending in a hard-fought quarter-final defeat. He plays his club hockey for Dutch Hoofdklasse side Amsterdam, having joined ahead of the 2025-26 season after five years with Holcombe.
