James made his debuts for England and Great Britain in 2017 before he returned for the latter in the FIH Hockey Pro League games against Spain in February 2022.
Later that month, he was confirmed as being part of the GB training squads for 2022. In the summer of 2022 he helped England win a superb Commonwealth Games medal in front of a home crowd in Birmingham.
