Player Profile
A highly respected defender, Liam Sanford is known for his incredibly brave defending — often the first to charge down penalty corners, putting in crunching challenges in and around his own circle. A knee injury saw him miss much of 2019, but he fought back to help GB qualify for Tokyo 2020 before appearing at the Games themselves, helping the country to a fifth-placed finish.
He recovered from a difficult 2022, hampered by a recurring hamstring injury, to be selected for the Great Britain squad that toured Argentina, where he scored his first GB goal. He was subsequently named in England's squad for the 2023 FIH World Cup in India and helped Great Britain qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Sanford went on to make his second Olympic appearance at Paris 2024, having previously competed at Tokyo 2020, and passed a combined 100 caps for England and Great Britain during the qualifying campaign. He continues to balance his hockey career with service as an RAF Senior Aircraftman, playing his club hockey for Old Georgians.
