Sam Taylor grew up in the South West, attending South Dartmoor College and playing for Ashmoor Hockey Club as a teenager. He made it into the England set-up at U18 level, having missed out on the U16 squad, and continued through the EDP from there.
He made his senior England debut against Spain in February 2022, and later that same month was named in the Great Britain training squad — an early breakthrough for the Holcombe defender.
Taylor has continued to build his England caps across the FIH Pro League through the 2022-2026 cycle, remaining a member of the senior squad's defensive rotation as England prepared for the 2026 FIH World Cup. He plays his club hockey for Holcombe.
