England Make It A Clean Sweep Of Master’s World Cup Titles In Nottingham

Ten days of superb hockey culminated in final’s day on Sunday at the Nottingham Hockey Centre and it was the home nation’s squads who won out across all four competitions.

England’s over 35 men started proceedings with a 2-1 win in a tight final against South Africa, despite dominating possession.  The over 35 women were up next and retained their World Cup title, coming from a goal down to beat Ireland 2-1.  In the over 40 Women's competition England scored twice in the second half to overcome Argentina and make it a hat-trick of World Cup gold medals. Finally, England’s over 40 men came through a penalty shoot-out after their two goal lead was levelled by Australia.  England’s goalkeeper Hatton was the hero in the shoot-out keeping out 3 penalties as they won out 3-1.

World Masters Hockey President Glen Patton described that ‘the bar had been raised’  when talking in glowing terms about Nottingham 2022.  Particular thanks must go to Steve Floyd, his organising committee and an army of volunteers for putting on such a good spectacle of hockey.

The baton is now passed to two more World Cups in South Africa and Japan later this year, as the other Master’s age groups come together to compete.
