Funded Masters Study and Performance Coach

Glasgow University Sport Association (GUSA) funded part-time postgraduate degree in conjunction with Performance Hockey coaching  
This project offers an individual the opportunity to undertake an internship comprising a part-time taught MSc or other postgraduate degree in conjunction with high performance coaching and development with our University of Glasgow Hockey club.  
This internship aims to:  
- Develop a well-rounded professional with first-class skills and knowledge in high-performance sports coaching.  
-Improve the performance and development in our University sports clubs 
-drive performance standards and structures within University clubs  
Role: The successful candidate will lead the performance and development squads for training and matches across our Women’s Hockey club within University of Glasgow Sport whilst developing their knowledge and skills in this area. The candidate will:  
-Plan, programme and deliver high performance training sessions underpinned with extensive coaching knowledge and experience for Performance and Development  
-Lead the 1st team in BUCS and National League Fixtures  
-Lead or assist the 2nd team in matches when available 
-Develop a culture where strength and conditioning is central to the preparation process for competitive sport for GUSA clubs  
-Collaborate with UofG Sport and GUSA colleagues to ensure athletes are supported holistically with their physical, social and mental wellbeing  
-Assist with UofGSport’s Active Lifestyle and Operational teams to provide a world changing experience for GUSA club members and other UofG Sport members.  
-Commit to continuing professional development throughout the duration of the role 
Expectations:  
The successful candidate is expected to carry out an average of 10 hours of work per week in the role outlined above, whilst studying towards their postgraduate degree on a part-time basis. In return, GUSA will fund up to £5,600 per year for two years towards the tuition fees for undertaking part-time study commencing during the 2024/25 Academic Session.  It is essential that the teaching timetable is compatible with the training and match schedules of our hockey club.  You will be required to take training on weekday evenings and be available for matches at weekends and Wednesday afternoons.  In addition, GUSA will fund up to £500 per annum towards coach development qualifications in hockey or other continued professional development.  Mentoring support will be provided from the UofG Sport Performance and Development Team. The candidate will be given the opportunity for paid work as a freelance coach with other teams for work carried out over and above their obligations outlined above. Payment for this work will be in line with the usual pay structures for all other employed freelance coaches.  Player/Coach roles will also be considered.  
 
Role Criteria:    
Essential:   
E1. Must meet the entry requirements for entry to your chosen postgraduate course 
E2. Level 1 UKCC Coaching Qualification in hockey with aspirations to attain level 2 in the near future  
E3. Some experience in strength and conditioning and performance testing 
E4. Some experience in coaching or competing in Performance Sport at University level or higher.  
E5. First class communication skills  
E6. Knowledge of basic IT systems and experience using Microsoft office packages or equivalents.  
Desirable:  
D1. Level 2 or 3 coaching qualification in hockey 
D2: Extensive knowledge of sports structures within hockey 
D3. Experience of coaching performance athletes  
D5. Undergraduate degree in Sports Therapy or Physiotherapy  
D6. Undergraduate degree or qualifications in nutrition
