Player Profile
A very exciting player to watch, Phil Roper has become one of the deadliest attacking threats in world hockey in recent years. His quality had been known for a long time — he made his international debut in 2013 and co-captained both England and GB between 2017-2018 — but he shot to further prominence in 2019, finishing as joint-third highest scorer in the inaugural season of the FIH Hockey Pro League with nine goals in 16 games, before producing an outrageous finish against Malaysia in the FIH Olympic Qualifiers. He also scored at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, his first appearance at the Games.
Away from the pitch, Phil started his own hockey podcast with Brendan Creed in 2020 and became a father for the first time in February 2021.
One of England's most prolific attacking midfielders, Phil helped England to Commonwealth Games bronze in Birmingham in 2022, finishing as the tournament's leading scorer in terms of field goals to take his career Commonwealth Games tally to 11 across three Games. He went on to represent England at the 2023 World Cup and the 2023 EuroHockey Championships before helping Great Britain qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Roper made his second Olympic appearance at Paris 2024, having first featured at Tokyo 2020 where he also scored, and has continued to be one of the most potent attacking threats in the England and Great Britain set-up through the 2025 EuroHockey Championships. He now plays his club hockey for Old Georgians after a spell at Holcombe, balancing his career with fatherhood and his hockey podcast.
