Since being called up to the senior programme in January 2017, James Gall has become a key component of the midfield for both England and Great Britain. In his first tournament he helped GB win their first Sultan Azlan Shah gold medal, before also winning bronze with England at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and playing at the 2018 World Cup. He barely missed a game for Great Britain, appearing in the 2019 and 2020/21 FIH Hockey Pro League before making his Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020.
It could have been so much different for James, having fractured his skull and spine in a freak accident back in 2015. He fought back superbly to become one of the most reliable and gritty players in the team.
He continued to be a mainstay of the England and Great Britain midfield through the 2022-2026 cycle, featuring twice in the 2022/23 FIH Pro League for GB and representing England at the 2023 EuroHockey Championships. His recent Great Britain appearances included four matches in the 2023/24 Pro League as the team qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Gall has continued to feature for both England and Great Britain through the 2024/25 and 2025/26 Pro League and EuroHockey Championship campaigns, remaining with boyhood club Surbiton throughout. He is set to be among the senior midfield options as England prepare for the 2026 FIH World Cup.
